Thursday in Berlin

Yesterday was a total food on the streets and in cafes day. We cancelled the
reservation we had last night at the Alte ZollHaus purely because after we
had been eating/grazing all day at Imbiss´s and at KDW we were not in a
frame of mind to have a structured meal....besides nothing can compare with
the food available in cafe´s and on the street here in Berlin. I have this
habit of eating at train stations...some of the best food I can remember
enjoying has been standing up in German Railway stations with a wurst and
beer in hand!

Today we were out of the apartment at 8AM - travelled via U-Bahn to Bahnhof
Zoo to meet our Walking Tours of Berlin Guide and then embarked on our five
hour walking tour in the freezing cold. It wasn´t too bad when we started
out but it progressively got colder as the wind picked up speed during the
trip. I love travelling in the Northern Latitudes in this type of weather -
all sane tourists are either back at home or taking sun on a Caribbean
Island supping rum drinks and here we were in the freezing cold walking
around Berlin in arctic conditions...but had Berlin all to ourselves or so
it seemed! The plus side was that it was only cold and not wet. It
sprinkled a little rain for about 5 minutes at the end of the tour but then
stopped. We have been extremely lucky with the weather so far on this trip -
only can hope it keeps up because it´s been so delightful not to be walking
around in the rain. The tour guide was very good (he was from Toronto,
Canada and had been a tour guide in Munchen before coming up to Berlin.
This has it´s benefits as he wasn`t focused on the usual politics of East
Berlin versus West or the rights and wrongs of the wall communism and the
Cold War but focused on Berlin`s origins and the historical time line which
had to, of course, include the Third Reich, the wall, East Germany and the
Soviet influence on the city. On this tour I came to realize that he was
not even born when the wall was erected and must have been only a baby when
the wall came down in 1989. This made me, for the first time,
actually realize my age! After the tour we returned to Bahnhof Zoo and into
the internet cafe to work on our apartment rental in Paris...nothing like
leaving things to the last minute! Living Life on the edge, what a way to
go!
Then it was off to Alt Spandau and another Christmas Market to partake in
more german food, wine and entertainment for the evening...just can´t get
enough of all the german food and drink (could this be to do with my
heritage by chance?)...I wonder if we´ll eat well in Paris and Lyon? Anyway
we are back at the apartment now and ready to call it a night...tomorrows
another day....
